Could "cursed technology" be the people's savior?

Today, we learned cell phone numbers of all Democrat members of Congress have been leaked, numbers likely only available to lobbyists and donors, not their constituents.

Such leaks will bring concern to the Washington community which controls our lives  in so many ways, in legislation, regulations and Executive Orders from the president, yet rarely contact us unless its to boast or seek a contribution!

Despite the impersonal connection new technology has brought, it allows boundaries and barriers of privacy public servants depend on to be breached.

This weekend members of Congress will surely be changing their cell phone numbers, 
a meaningless task if the leakers can access the new ones just as easily in the future.

Although the leak targeted Democrats, Republicans are equally vulnerable, and all members should embark on a constructive response, something worthy of the people they represent.

First, as a rule, NOTHING should be included in emails that members do not want the public to see. The public pays their salaries, the offices, their electronic devices and email services, so the public has the right to know everything aside from security sensitive information.

Second, members of Congress should do more to connect with an average of 750,000 constituents each member represents, the people who matter, the ones who elect them, no matter how little they contribute.

This would a great first step to regain the confidence and respect so few in its government  can claim.
