Serious followers of broadcast news do not watch to be entertained,
we want to be informed, with fact based information on important
issues.
Unfortunately, the individuals who report these issues offer views
so far adrift from our own it is hard to even respect their opinions.
But, perhaps we should step back to clearly see what is going on,
network executive believing all programs are entertainment and
require "show business" techniques to bring in audiences.
"Show business" is the primary driver of programs aired on TV
to gain audience appeal. We see it in every element of television
and movie presentations.
There is nothing wrong with 'show business', the public wants to
be entertained, and continue to watch programs that provide an
escape from the daily dosage of bad news.
But, network programmers need to ensure 'show business' does
not blend into serious news reports and interviews on important
issues.
Guests should not urged to "mix it up" for good television for
it devalues what the public tunes in to watch.
Unfortunately, too often when we discuss the programs we watch
we often note the individuals who report these issues offer views
so far adrift from our own it is hard to even respect their opinions.
