Lost in the discussion on whether the Federal govt. should fully fund
college education, is what the full impact will be.
Selectively, the most appealing arguments are offered. "Free" college
tuition eliminates the heavy burden of student loans, which it might.
A policy change will open universities doors to more students, which
it also might.
What is not being discussed is how "free" college tuition would affect
public universities.
Currently, universities do not compete on cost. They do not have to.
College tuition is whatever universities sets it at, as long as loans are
plentiful.
But, how will this change? Again, there will be no need to hold the
line on college tuition if the Federal govt. will foot the bill.
In fact, without concern over how much debt a student can carry its
reasonable to see tuition going hire!
Proponents of "free" tuition refuse to look backward to see what
"free" programs have done time and again. All drove costs higher
than projected while quality deteriorated.
