This was the comment from Michael Reagan after Donald Trump won
the Indiana primary which all but cemented the Republican nomination.
Its easy to view the ascension of Trump as the reason for the death kneel
for Reaganism in the Republican Party if you actually believed Reaganism
was alive in the first place. I believe Reaganism died long before, almost
thirty years before.
Its only remnants are the annual Republican Reagan dinners to fill party
coffers, not to promote conservatism.
With no disrespect to the most significant American president since FDR,
the fate of the "party of Reagan" was sealed when he selected George HW
Bush as his running mate!
After two terms of Reaganism it was the Bush presidency that ended the
"party of Reagan" by immediately signaling with his acceptance speech
claiming he would bring a 'kinder gentler' brand of conservatism!
Reagan never had to add a qualifier when speaking about conservatism!
And the claim by the Republican Party it was the "party of Reagan" is
about as hollow as the label conservative is to the GOP brand. Neither
Reagan or conservatism fit comfortably within the Republican establishment.
Reagan was a "true conservative", with no need to qualify the word such
as his successor did with "kinder, gentler" or George W Bush did with
"compassionate". Neither man felt comfortable claiming to be limited govt.
conservatives proven by the fact both expanded the national govt.
The "party of Reagan" is about as relevant as the "party of Lincoln".
Neither slogan accurately describes the Republican Party.
The Republican Party is a 'business' in a two business "industry",
American governance, each selling promised for donations and votes
in order to acquire the power to govern.
The "Reagan Revolution" never won the 'war', merely delayed the
expansion of the federal government as his predecessors presided over.

The party will survive and return to the principles of its platform.
