Here we are, one week from Election Day, and I still receive tweets
from staunch conservative publications such as the Weekly Standard
and National Review who have not come to grips that Donald Trump
is the Republican nominee.
In the tweet came the following,
"Let's look at what the Republican Party did for Trump
and what he has done for the party."
and what he has done for the party."
Its a fair question considering the unorthodox and divisive battle,
with some leading Republicans saying they could not endorse or
even publicly campaign with Donald Trump. So much for party unity.
with some leading Republicans saying they could not endorse or
even publicly campaign with Donald Trump. So much for party unity.
But, before we broach the question of a candidate and the party,
a bigger question is in the minds of many in the electorate, the
relationship between the party and its most loyal constituency,
its conservative base!
I have not seen this as a priority by those who live and work in
Washington, who rarely depart the "orbit" of the nation's capital.
Some conservative beliefs:
A. Smaller national governance
B. Limited authority over the states
C. Fiscally responsible spending
D. Restricting authority of federal agencies
When the same question is asked,
"Look at what the Republican Party did for conservatives
and what they have done for the party"
and what they have done for the party"
We know the party has failed conservatives on all four measures
listed above.
A. Government continues to grow
B. More authority over states
C. Deficit spending and higher debt year after year
D. Federal agencies awash in regulations
And we also know conservatives have served the party well,
giving the Republican Party the majority in the House in 2010
and then the Senate in 2014....thanks to the emergence of a
strong conservative force, the Tea Party.
So we see the 'thanks' the party has given conservatives!
Before these self-righteous publications try to convince us
Donald Trump is not deserving of party loyalty they should
revisit what the Republican Party has done for conservatives.
And, while they are at it they should consider how little the
party has done to promote conservatism both magazines
offer their own readers.
