Impossible expectations, quality airline service!

Over the years the indignity of the airline industry on the traveling public only worsened.

Airline travel has gone from an experience only the few, well-dressed travelers could
afford to become the equivalent of public bus or train service with a "come as you are"
dress code,  at bargain prices.

This was, despite the benefit of "affordability", the first giant step, backwards as $99
airfares could not be offered without smaller airlines either failing or forced to merge,
which brought us to where we are.

Over the past fifty years airlines, large and small, have come and gone, including some
of the most successful. Only a few of the larger carriers remain.  Most others are out
of business or have merged. These are some now gone, American, American West,
Continental, Eastern, National,  Northwest, Ozark, Pan AM,  TWA,  and Western.

As of today only three major airlines American (was US Air), Delta, and United remain.

To appreciate the difficulty of an airline being successful, consider Warren Buffet saying
he would never have bought an airline after seeing his investment in US Air plummet.

But, after the shakeout these three carriers have done little to bring air travel to the standard
of decades ago or even to the level of $99 fares.

Consider "21st century" air travel.  Complementary beverage and peanuts are now a rarity,
select magazines to read, gone!, meals on long flights, no longer free, stowed luggage, now
have a cost per bag, even reserving a window or aisle seat requires an extra charge.

But, some things have not changed. Planes are still overbooked, flights still take off late,
passengers miss connections,and don't forget the egregious cancellation fee.

There was an old line, "can anyone run this airline", guess the answer is still NO!
