Years ago bullying was handled at the local level. There was no need for
a national program to stop bullying, as it was a rare occurrence.
But, in recent years bullying has joined other problems in public education
leading to the US Dept. of Education to address the problem, bolstered by
public service ADs to end this unacceptable behavior of students tormenting
other students.
The focus on bullying has improved things as statistics have shown reported
incidents are down.
However, the folks at the US Dept. of Education have not gone far enough as
something much worse than bullying presents an even bigger problem.
While student on student bullying is down, student on "teacher" attacks have
risen to a level no less than criminal assault!
Unfortunately, not much seems to be done by school administrators, teacher
unions or parents. In some high schools students rule, going through the day
with little regard for authority figures. When challenged they response like
thugs rather than showing respect towards the adults responsible for their
education.
Until school administrators take appropriate measures including supporting
classroom teachers and using law enforcement as needed these attacks will
continue when teacher exert their authority.
