This was the question I received in response to an email concerning
the battle here in NC over extending restroom privileges to anyone
based on their preference, no matter their gender.
When pondering the answer there is no need to limit this question to
a single issue, viewed in isolation. It can be asked each time an activist
group threatens to boycott when decisions displease them.
Call it the "non-American Way" to dissent.
But, the answer to "why don't we do what they do?", is simple, this
is not who WE are!
Even when in disagreement, we respect the law and even businesses
who make such decisions. We do protest with our phone calls, letters
and most importantly our votes, but we do not seek to damage those
we disagree with.
Conversely, we rally in support of businesses threatened by boycotts
when we are in agreement.
This occurred here in NC a couple of years back when the CEO of
Chick-Fil-A made a statement he believed gay marriage was wrong.
Social media rallied people to boycott Chick-Fil-A. Protesters showed
up but so did we! We went to Chick-Fil-A in record numbers to support
the right of one man to offer his opinion.
This is the true "American Way".
This is "who we are", its too bad all Americans don't follow our example!
